1.

WHICH CLASS SHOULD I TAKE?

The MSF Beginning Rider Course (BRC) is approved by the Virginia Rider Training Program and the DMV.  It was designed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.   Learn the fundamentals of motorcycle operation and practice street-riding strategies. A passing grade in this course will allow you to waive both the knowledge test and the skills test at the Virginia DMV.  That means that if you pass the course, you will get your motorcycle license and you may be eligible for discounts on your motorcycle insurance.  To enroll, you must be at least 16 years old and eligible to receive your motorcycle license—you do not need a motorcycle license or learner's permit to attend our classes. The cost for the Beginning Rider course is $175.00 and a motorcycle is provided for you.

The TRY IT OUT! class is an optional BRC pre-course, designed for the novice rider to gain familiarity and comfort with the motorcycle before taking the Basic Rider Course (BRC).  If you have ever wondered if operating a motorcycle is for you, or you just aren’t sure that you’re ready to sign up for the BRC, this 3 hour program may be a great place to find out.  The course covers “Motorcycle Familiarization”, “Using the Friction Zone”, “Starting & Stopping” lessons.  The fee for the Try It Out course is $75.00 per student.  Bikes and helmets are provided.

The Experienced Rider Course is for riders who already have their motorcycle license and want to boost their riding skills in a controlled environment.  Participants in this half-day program ride  their own motorcycles while practicing exercises  developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.  Most insurance companies offer discounts for students who complete this course.  Some motorcycle clubs will reimburse a portion of your class fee.  You’ll need to bring your own bike for this program, along with your motorcycle license, registration, proof of insurance, and riding gear.   The fee for this class is $75.00.

2.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR A CLASS?

Registration can be done ONLINE by clicking the link for the REGISTER tab on this site, or registration can be completed over the phone.  Please note that registration for a class is not complete until your payment has been processed.  You'll need a credit or debit card handy when you call.  Payment by cash, check or money order may be accepted.  Give us a call for details.

3.

WILL I GET MY MOTORCYCLE LICENSE IF I TAKE THE BRC CLASS?

If you have a valid Virginia driver's license and you PASS this class, you will receive your motorcycle license.  No further testing at the DMV will be required.  (There are age restrictions for riders under 19, please see question #11 below, or call us for details.)

4.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

To be eligible for a refund, we must receive & acknowledge your notice a minimum of  14 days prior to your class date.  There is a cancellation of $50 that will be assessed, but the remainder of your payment will be credited.

Transfers between classes may be requested 10 days prior to your course date.

If you are late, don't show up, cancel with less than 14 days notice, or don't complete the class NO REFUND will be given.  Classes start promptly.  If you aren't there on time, your space in the class will be forfeited and there will be no refunds.

5.

WILL A PASSING GRADE AT THIS SCHOOL BE ACCEPTED IN OTHER STATES?

For West Virginia residents, a passing grade in our program will meet the RIDING TEST requirements for WV, but you will need to take a WV written test at the WV DMV.

For all other states, you will receive a waiver that states that you passed the requirements for the state of VIRGINIA motorcycle license.  Contact the DMV in your state to see if it will transfer.

6.

7.

HOW MUCH DO THE CLASSES COST?

The fee for the BASIC  RIDER COURSE is $175 per student at the Winchester location.  If you prefer private or semiprivate classes, the fee increases.

Private, 'closed' classes are available for groups of 1-4 students.  The fee to book a closed class is $550 for ONE student, $275 each for TWO students, $250 each for THREE students or $225 each for 4 students. These classes are NOT scheduled on weekends.  The typical schedule for private classes is two consecutive weekdays from 8:00 - 4:30.

The TRY IT OUT course is $75 per student.

The fee for the ADVANCED RIDER COURSE is $75 per student.

8.
WHAT IF IT RAINS DURING MY CLASS?

You are going to get wet.  :)

We ride rain or shine.  If it DOES rain, the silver lining is that you get a chance to learn how to ride in soggy weather while you are with a certified Rider Coach.

While rain gear is not a requirement, it sure is nice to have!  There is rain gear available for purchase at both Broadway and Winchester training sites.  We do NOT loan, rent, or provide rain gear.

If it's likely to rain during your class, make plans to have access to rain gear.  (We recommend FROG TOGS ... they keep you dry without steaming you!)  At the very least, plan to bring a change of clothes (or two) and a rain coat.

9.
WHAT KIND OF BIKES WILL WE RIDE?  CAN I BRING MY OWN BIKE?

All of the motorcycles in our program are less than 500cc and weigh no more than 400 pounds.  We have a variety of bikes which include Star, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Beuhl & Hondas.

For the Basic Rider Course, all students must ride a bike provided by the school.  Your instructor will help you find the most suitable bike in our program to meet your needs during the class.

10.

IF I ALREADY HAVE MY LEARNER'S PERMIT, DO I STILL HAVE TO TAKE THE WRITTEN TEST DURING THE BRC CLASS?

Yes.  To successfully complete the BRC, you must pass the written AND riding portions of the course.  If you would like to review the student handbook, please see the following link.  BRC Student Handbook

11.

IF I'M NOT 19 YET, WHEN CAN I GET MY LICENSE?  HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO TAKE THE BRC COURSE?

In the state of Virginia, you must have a regular (car) VA learners permit in order to take the class.  You do NOT need a MOTORCYCLE learner's permit to take the BRC.  In the state of Virginia, riders must be 19 years of age or maintain a MOTORCYCLE LEARNERS PERMIT for 9 MONTHS before they can apply for their regular M Class Endorsement.   For more details, see the VA DMV site.  (VA DMV Motorcycle License Page)

12.

I SPEAK ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, BUT WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE CLASS.  WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

During the classroom part of the BRC, there are Spanish subtitles on the video.  Books and written tests are available in Spanish, but we have a limited supply, so please notify us in advance if you prefer the Spanish edition.  Right now, our instructors do not speak Spanish.  If you would like to bring an interpretor with you to class, you are welcome to bring someone to class.  They will not be charged to attend the class if they are only serving as an interpretor.  They will not be allowed to help you during the written part of the test.
